Destino de Colores - Colorful destinations of Pichincha
- The colors of Machachi are reminiscent of the chacarera tradition, the brown color of the saddles, the red of their ponchos, the white of their dairy products and the green of their fertile lands.
- Machachi, Aloasí, Calacalí, Calderón, La Merced, Lloa, Mindo, Pacto, Pedro Vicente Maldonado, Píntag, Pomasqui, are part of the Destino de Colores campaign, they are a select group of rural destinations of Pichincha province that offer to tourists a variety of tourism experiences oriented to contact with nature and culture; as well as sustainable and community tourism experiences.

What should you know about Machachi?
- Machachi is in a valley located near to the San Pedro river at the south of Pichincha province at 2,949 meters above sea level.
- Machachi is a meeting place and starting point for tourist activities. There you can also taste local and typical Ecuadorian cuisine. Tourists can enjoy cultural events, artisanal markets and especially the friendliness of its people.
- Independence day: November 11th, 1820.
Cotopaxi volcano
- One of the entrances to the Cotopaxi Volcano is located in Machachi. It is possible to appreciate its scenic beauty from the surroundings without climbing, as well as enjoying activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping.
Cotopaxi National Park
- From Machachi it is possible to enter the protected area of the Cotopaxi National Park , going to the Santa Ana neighborhood of El Pedregal, going through haciendas and enjoying the rural landscape for approx. 14 km.
- In the park, you can visit the Limpiopungo lagoon as well as hiking, horseback riding, cycling and camping.
Sincholagua volcano
- The Sincholagua Volcano, currently extinguished and eroded, is at 4,919 meters above sea level. This represents a refuge for deer and a dwelling place for condors, as well as hosting a segment of the Inca Trail.
San Miguel del Pedregal Waterfall
- The San Miguel del Pedregal Waterfall presents an impressive waterfall in a remnant of Andean forest where yaguales, pumamaquis, quishuares, among others, also a variety of birds predominate.
- This waterfall can be accessed from Machachi, taking the road to the North control of the Cotopaxi National Park approximately 8 kilometers at the entrance of San Miguel del Pedregal neighborhood at the foot of Pasochoa.
Chagra culture
- The Chagra Culture represented by huarmis and caris chagras, are a symbol of the miscegenation of our ancestors with Spanish culture; with customs and traditions that have prevailed for hundreds of years.
- These traditions have been transmitted from generation to generation, such as the ability to ride a horse, manage wild cattle and dedicate their days to caring for the land.
Machachi Main Church
- This antique church shows a mixture of various styles such as Baroque and Doric symmetry.
- Its history begins in the 17th century, when the Franciscan missionaries began the construction of the first temple, made of adobe and covered with straw.
Rumiñahui volcano
- This mountain is a privileged balcony to observe other elevations: Cotopaxi, Illinizas, Pasochoa, Sincholagua, among others.
- The Rumiñahui volcano hiking is considered to be of medium difficulty.
Machachi Sunday fair
- Healthy vegetables, varieties of tubers, colorful grains and fruits from different parts of the country, form a rainbow at the Machachi Sunday Fair located in the center of the city and where visitors buy their products to prepare food.
The Barros Fair (mud fair)
- Clay pots with a wooden spoon put the traditional seasoning in the preparation of traditional Ecuadorian food.
- These cookware sets are found in the traditional clay fair that takes place in the month of November in the main streets of Machachi.
Tesalia
- Tesalia is located 4.4 km from Machachi. Its waters contain mineral salts from snow-capped mountains and volcanoes that are the protagonists of this natural phenomenon.
- In Tesalia you will discover a nice spa with two swimming pools and sports facilities.
La Calera
- It is located 2.5 km from the Obelisk of Alóag and by a cobbled path you can access this beautiful place to observe the San Luis waterfall
- This waterfall has a fall of 25 meters, next to it the old La Calera Hydroelectric Power Plant, that provides electricity to the national system.
