Jorupe Reserve
It has abundant species of flora and fauna. The reserve is managed by The Jocotoco Foundation, located 5 km away from the city of Macará, its mission is aimed at motivating the national citizen and Foreign bird and conservation lover. The Urraca Lodge is located
in the Tumbesian dry forest. The reserve has facilities of helpful access for educational and tourist purposes.
The Jorupe Reserve protects an important remnant of dry forest Tumbesino. In this region there is one of the greatest concentrations of endemic or distribution species in a restricted geographical area. Many of these species are in serious danger of extinction.
Entrance fee: $ 15 dollars for foreigners, payable at the entrance. With the same
ticket can enter the Utuana Reserve which is one hour away from the Jorúpe Reserve.
The name Jorupe, comes from shrubs that are born on the banks of the Miraflores creek called jorupes. The grounds of the reserve were in possession of a miner, over time he sold them to the Jorupe Foundation, lands with great mining wealth such as gold and other minerals. An American ornithologist discovered that this field had diversity of birds typical of a Tumbesian region.
Jorupe Reserve Limits: The reserve is surrounded by the following towns:
- To the north: Mandala and Tajapanga
- To the South: with the city of Macará
- To the East: Curichanga, Corral and Santo Cristo
- To the West: Mandala.
- Area: 1,050 ha
- Creation: In 2004.
- Hydrography: In this Biological Reserve it has two aspects called Miraflores and Jorupe, where the Miraflores creek is born.
- Flora: The Orchids of the Jorupe reserve have a special area where there are very few protected sites. In Jorupe there are the most beautiful and priced orchids.
- Fauna: Endangered species of interest to observers of birds like the red-headed parakeet (Aratinga erythrogenys), among others.
Jorupe Reserve Activities
Hiking or walks. There is a main path enabled to be able to walk for approximately two kilometers, in addition to 6 other secondary trails. Its weather is sunny for those who like to enjoy this reservation. This is the perfect site for observing endemic birds. The main path has an ecological route with a third order path.
Jocotoco Foundation Service: It has 7 cabins, each cabin consists with basic services such as private bathroom, among others. Next to these cabins is designed the main cabin that is multipurpose for meetings, conferences and also offers restaurant service for those who stay in this sector as research teams, groups of tourists, and visitors in general.
