The Paute canton is located in the northeast of the Province of Azuay. It is divided into 8 parishes: San Cristóbal, El Cabo, Paute, Chican, Bulan, Dug Dug, Tomebamba and Guarainag.
Parishes of Paute
- Paute: It is the cantonal head, the Paute Hydroelectric Dams is located here. It represents a great tourist attraction.
- San Cristóbal: has beautiful landscapes and viewpoints, now you can see the floating house that survived in the Josefina disaster, in the El Descanso sector. Its population consists of artisans dedicated to the elaboration of articles in toquilla straw.
- Bulán: A parish that is 7 km away from Paute, this land is dedicated to agriculture where they have great abundance in their harvests especially fruit, is also recognized because this woodwork is found here, and has fine finishes. They are recognized nationally.
- El Cabo: This parish stands out for keeping the local cuisine alive, its locals are experts in developing the exquisite typical dishes that the Paute canton has. You can still see old buildings that keep tapestries, here we find the famous artists Freddy Rocano, creator of beautiful works of art.
- Dug dug: This peculiar name is due to the name of a tree that was found in the central square. The tradition of bullfighting that takes place in February is still maintained in this parish.
- Chicán: One of the oldest parishes in the canton, its natural wealth is of tourist importance for the canton and among its communities is the Uzhupud Inn, visited by locals and visitors. It aso has natural viewpoints such as Maras, in the which you get a wide view of the Canton.
- Tomebamba and Guaraynag: They are the parishes that are distanced from the cantonal center, so they still keep much of their traditions, and still maintain their typical dresses. Its landscapes considerably decorate these parishes.
